Inefficient foreign exchange trading could be costing clients of funds managers up to 6 per cent of the value of their portfolio over 40 years, research shows.

International financial services firm Russell Investments analysed 40,000 foreign exchange transactions worth a total of $28 billion made on behalf of New Zealand institutional investors and the price at which they were executed.

It found the average cost of the transactions was much higher than necesssary because too often they were executed at the highest price of the day instead of the cheapest.

Russell Investments investment services manager, Sally Corbett, said the average cost of each foreign exchange transaction came to about 9 basis points compared to an average range of between 1 and 3 basis points for most traded developed market currencies.

Higher transaction costs could cost institutional investors up to 2 per cent of a portfolio’s total value over a 40-year period, she said.

Losing 2 per cent of a fund’s value due to poor foreign exchange execution “isn’t just a rounding error”. Saving an average 25 basis points on foreign exchange fees every year for 40 years would increase an investors fund value by 6 per cent.

“It really comes back to more money for you for your retirement.”

At the extreme end some institutions in the research were paying up to 40 basis points.

The costs of foreign exchange trading had been below the radar for too long in New Zealand, Ms Corbett said. “Investments can’t assume that FX trades are being executed fairly. It should be unacceptable to investors and managers when far more foreign exchange transactions are executed at closer to the worst price of the day rather than the best.”

Corbett said foreign exchange transactions have traditionally been regarded as an administrative cost of doing business and have not undergone performance scrutiny.

As a Dayton child-custody case garners more and more media attention, it raises the question: Will Baby Vanessa become the next Baby Jessica?

Jessica DeBoer was the 2-yearold daughter of an Ann Arbor, Mich., couple who made international news when she was returned to her birth parents in August, 1993.

Vanessa Doss is the 2-year-old daughter of an Orange County, Calif., single mother who wants to adopt her but is being challenged for custody by a birth father from Dayton with a criminal record.

Both cases raise the wrenching question, “How do you balance birth parents’ rights with the best interests of the child?”

To the average person, the situation facing Stacey Doss seems all but unthinkable: Vanessa may be placed in temporary foster care in Montgomery County until the custody dispute is settled in the courts.

The 45-year-old single mother has been ordered to return Vanessa to Montgomery County by July 16 in anticipation of a custody trial set for late July in Montgomery County Juvenile Court.

NEW DELHI: If the rising mercury and Election Commission restrictions on party flags, hoardings and posters are posing a challenge to candidates, the SMS seems to have come to their rescue. With the sharp fall in the bulk SMS charges from 12p last December to 3p, it seems to be playing a key role in the last days of campaigning in the capital.

With mobile phone connectivity having improved significantly in the capital, SMSes have become the cheapest and fastest mode for communication between the candidates and voters. Rough estimates suggest approximately 70% of the electorate has mobile connectivity i.e over 70 lakh voters. This seems to have pushed the demand massively.

On an average each parliamentary constituency has over 10 lakh voters “Sending SMSes is cheap in comparison to holding a public meeting,” said a BJP source involved in this exercise.

A rough calculation shows that in case a candidate buys 10 lakh SMSes today from a service provider, it will cost only Rs 30,000-40,000. If the phone numbers are obtained from some agency, one has to shell out another Rs 30,000 (3p per number). Taken together, the total expenditure will be Rs 60,000-70,000, an amount that any candidate might have to spend to hold a meeting of only 1,000 voters in an area.

Poll managers complain that meeting expenses have increased manifold since now the EC has made it mandatory to book any community hall or park to host an election meeting. Moreover, they have to get permission from the agency concerned.

“Such meetings do not any longer translate the turnout to additional votes since these are primarily attended by those who are already party sympathisers. From that point of view, SMSes are more meaningful and cost-effective in an urban area like Delhi where the average voter doesn’t show interest in public meetings,” admitted a Congress insider.

However, this is not a substitute for the candidates’ personal and direct appeal. Moreover, the senders have little scope for mentioning much about the candidate since one SMS can accommodate only 150 characters (letters, signs and space)
